“Enjoy the upswing”

The crisis has affected us all in different ways, on the one hand there are the profiteers, those who could or will generate positive growth rates in and out of the lockdown, e.g. the online trade or IT industry, the construction industry and its supply chains, possibly the pharmaceutical industry and the healthcare sector, could rightly raise its necessity and importance significantly. 

On the other hand, there are the companies that are suffering severely from the crisis and whose continued existence is questionable in the future. Industries such as the automotive and its supply chains must reposition themselves.

It is precisely here, however, that it is also evident that the crisis is not the cause of the losses, but rather that the vehicle makes the omissions of the past transparent and has accelerated the decay extremely. 

What they have in common, however, is that supply chains have to be realigned, volumes are shifting, requirements from a qualitative point of view have to be met, parts of the supply chain have to be replaced in order to guarantee a stable and sustainable supply chain again. 

Obeya is a method to depict and deal with this scenario. Obeya, a method from lean management, aims to grasp larger problems and to work them off in a targeted manner with high implementation quality and speed by splitting them into smaller topics. 

The high degree of employee participation in finding the main topics creates a dynamic environment with the highest level of self-organization and motivation, which on the one hand significantly increases the problem-solving ability and on the other hand the ability of an organization to learn.

I also refer to this method as agile industrial engineering or agile project management.

How does this method work? A moderator introduces a team of experts to the problem, describes the mission and specifies the goal. By combining different techniques, the team then works out which problems are to be expected in the project, compares them to a uniform flight altitude and prioritizes and estimates the max. Lead time and effort depending on the problem.

These prioritized problems can now be referred to as the order status. Subsequently, according to the prioritization, the problems are drawn and resolved into concrete topics and provided with target states (Q-L-C).

Through this cascade process, the project achieves a highly focused goal orientation of those involved and thus gains speed and quality. This is due to the fact that tasks and measures have a smaller scope and that fulfillment or implementation is not recognizable as a deviation in the target state and that countermeasures can be taken on a short-cycle basis.
